History and Founding

Since the early 1970’s the University and the Institute of the German Red Cross Blood Transfusion Service of Baden-Württemberg, both located in Ulm, have pioneered work in the area of bone marrow transplantation and established one of the first German labs for tissue typing. In order to simplify the difficult search for suitable unrelated donors for such transplants, in 1989 Professor Shraga Goldmann and Dr. Carlheinz Müller of the Ulm Working Party for Immunogenetics began collecting anonymous data from volunteer donors to German blood banks.
