European Marrow Donor Information System. A decentralized communication system. Collaborators communicate directly with one another via point-to-point connections. It covers all the steps involved in searching for a donor, from the initial request to distributing regularly updated donor lists, exchanging orders and results, through the collection of bone marrow. Communication is handled through standardized messages exchanged via an additionally secured e-mail protocol (“EMDIS Communication System”). Originally developed for Europe, this system has now been adopted by registries in the USA and Australia.
